### What is BMI?

BMI or Body Mass Index is a height/weight system used to assess a person’s body weight and total body fat. Your BMI determines whether you are underweight, normal, overweight, or obese.

# Body Mass Index (BMI):

## Weight Status

Below 18.5 – Underweight

18.5 – 24.9 – Normal

25.0 – 29.9 – Overweight

30.0 or Above – Obese

BMI ranges are indicators of your possible risk for some diseases and even death. So basically, as your BMI increases, your risk of developing health problems likewise increases, stated “Weightalogue”. Some health problems related to overweight and obesity include:

1. Diabetes
2. Osteoarthritis
3. High blood pressure
4. Cardiovascular disease
5. Dyslipidemia
6. Sleep Apnea
7. Female Infertility
8. Urinary incontinence
9. Cancer
10. Death

## How is BMI calculated?

First, measure your weight (either in pounds or kilograms) and height (either in inches or meters). Then, compute for your BMI using the following formula.

In English units:  BMI can be calculated using pounds and inches with the following formula.

BMI = Weight (in pounds) multiplied by 704.5 divided by [Height (in inches) X Height (in inches)]

In Metric units:  BMI can also be calculated using kilograms and meters with the following formula.

BMI = Weight (in kilos) divided by [Height (in meters) X Height (in meters)]

## Limitations:

BMI also has its limitations. BMI does not account for lean body mass. Thus, a healthy, muscular individual (e.g., competitive athlete or bodybuilder) with very low body fat can be classified as obese. Also, BMI does not consider frame size. So, a person with a stocky build can be considered overweight even if he or she doesn’t have a lot of body fat.

Also, BMI ranges are based on adult heights, making it a poor weight indicator for children and teens. BMI results can also be skewed for pregnant or nursing women who need more fat reserves than usual and for people aged 65 or more.

Keeping track of your BMI is one of the ways to help lose weight fast or gain it; if you know what BMI you have and what you BMI you should target for to get healthier and in shape, it gets easier to both lose weight and gain it depending upon your current BMI – in short, BMI gives you an idea how much you should weight in order to be fit and healthy.

It is now on you to either work for losing weight or gaining it, or let the BMI be the way it is now.
